The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette's touch is fatal. As long as she doesn't hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don't fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.
The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war-- and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she's exactly what they need right now.
Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.
In this electrifying debut, Tahereh Mafi presents a world as riveting asThe Hunger Games and a superhero story as thrilling as The X-Men. Full of pulse-pounding romance, intoxicating villainy, and high-stakes choices, Shatter Me is a fresh and original dystopian novel—with a paranormal twist—that will leave readers anxiously awaiting its sequel."

Okay, so my library kind of stinks. It never really has any newer popular books, I usually have to request them from other libraries in the system, and then it takes about 3 weeks before I get them. But when I went there to return some overdue books (oops!!!) I decided to take a quick look around just to see what they had. And I found Shatter Me. To explain my excitement, I literally RAN to another section of the library where Mike was looking at books to show him. Of course, he didn't understand. but I was almost jumping up and down with happiness that I had found a copy.
Juliette, for some reason, has a touch that's fatal to everyone, and as a result she hasn't touched or been touched by anyone in almost a year. During that whole time, she's been locked in a cell, in complete isolation, for accidentally killing a toddler. All that changes when one day, a boy is pushed into her cell with her. After her initial confusion, she realizes that she knows Adam. They went to school together when they were younger. Through their conversations, the reader learns that the world is not the same world that exists now. Food is a rarity, birds can't fly, and everything is ruled by The Reestablishment.
All of a sudden, Juliette and Adam are forced out of their cell. It turns out The Reestablishment wants to use Juliette to essentially torture people, and Adam might not be the great friend she thinks he is. Or maybe he is, and he's just pretending.
Oh, and one other minor thing - he just so happens to be immune to Juliette's fatal touch.
I loved this book. I can't say that enough. It did not let me down at all, in fact, it far exceeded my expectations. I didn't want to put it down. The relationship with Juliette and Adam was so sweet. Adam's brother was adorable and I just wanted to give him a hug for all the hardships he had been dealing with on his own at such a young age. Kenji Kishimoto was hysterical. Am I wrong that I kind of imagined him as having Barney Stinson's personality (and if you don't know who Barney Stinson is, go out, buy the first season of How I Met Your Mother, and be prepared to laugh. A lot. And then come back here and thank me for it).
The one thing I will say, all the reviews I had read of this mentioned that the whole novel was written in prose, which bothered most people. I was on the other side of the fence. It didn't really bother me all that much. The random words crossed out got old after a little while, but I quickly learned to just ignore it and immerse myself in the story.
The second in this series, Unravel Me, is expected to be released on February 5th, 2013. I've already marked it on my calendar.
